Leader and saxophonist Mike Smith is a very popular jazz musician on the North West jazz scene - dividing his time between fronting his renowned quintet and touring internationally as a side-man with artists like Elkie Brooks, Stevie Winwood, Heather Small, Tony Hadley and Kid Creole. Mike has a strong, full sound on both tenor and alto saxophone. He led an earlier band – Ginger Tunes – and they released an album of the same name in 2009.
The player he admires the most is Joshua Redmond and one can hear echoes of Redmond’s wonderful work in his playing style. On trumpet, Jamie Brownfield won the Rising Star category at the 2012 British Jazz Awards. His influences include Clifford Brown, Chet Baker and Wynton Marsalis revealing a prodigiously broad playing style running the whole array of jazz trumpet. Anthony Ormesher on guitar won The Daily Telegraph’s young musician of the Year award in 1993 at the tender age of 12! He has since won international awards including the Berlin Jazz & Blues Festival Award in 2006. Jack Cotterill on drums is equally well travelled and has backed many famous jazz players. One of whom, the multi award winning Alan Barnes wrote about Jack’s drumming - “Jack has all the attributes of a great jazz drummer. He has a deep knowledge of jazz history, is a master of dynamics, and is very much a team player. Most importantly though, he swings like mad. ”Mancunian Paul Robinson on bass completes the line up – he has also played Ronnie Scott’s and Glastonbury and notes Jaco Pastorius and Steely Dan amongst his influences.
What a line up – cannot wait to hear them!
